CMA Foundation: Your Investment Helps Make a Real Impact in Our Community

Posted By Columbus Medical Association - CMA, Friday, December 5, 2025
Updated: Friday, December 5, 2025

Thanks to the generosity of physicians and partners across Central Ohio, the CMA Foundation has invested more than $1.5 million this year to support initiatives that strengthen our community’s health, expand access to care, and uplift the next generation of physician leaders.

Since its creation in 1958, the Foundation has made strategic investments in physician-led and community initiatives. What began as a series of small, meaningful grants grew into a far greater opportunity for impact in 1993, with the sale of the Physicians Health Plan.

Today, that endowment has grown substantially through responsible stewardship and continued investment from the physician community. It now serves as the bedrock supporting the organizations and initiatives that are driving meaningful, positive change across Central Ohio.

If you are still considering your year-end giving, we hope you consider the CMA Foundation. Learn more and donate at cmafohio.org.

Giving Tuesday: A Global Day of Generosity

Posted By Columbus Medical Association - CMA, Thursday, November 20, 2025

As the holiday season approaches, communities across the world will come together for Giving Tuesday on December 2, 2025. Giving Tuesday was a simple idea launched in 2012 as a global movement dedicated to generosity, collaboration, and positive change. It has grown into an international day of philanthropy that encourages individuals and organizations to support causes that strengthen our communities and improve lives. For physicians and healthcare professionals, it offers a unique opportunity to champion the well-being of patients, colleagues, and the healthcare system as a whole.

Millions of people across the world participate each year by giving time, resources, and acts of kindness. Unlike consumer-focused events such as Black Friday or Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday shifts the focus toward compassion, service, and community impact.

Why Giving Tuesday Matters for Physicians
Physicians witness firsthand the needs within our healthcare system: patients struggling with access to care, public health programs stretched thin, and colleagues working under increasing pressures. Giving Tuesday aligns the core values of the medical profession by supporting community health programs that address social determinants of health and preventive care, improving physician well-being, burnout prevention, and mental health as well as modeling leadership and compassion.

Participation in Giving Tuesday demonstrates commitment to service beyond the exam room and inspires others within the community to get involved. It offers countless opportunities to contribute, whether individually or as part of a practice or institution. Here are a few ideas:

1. Donate to healthcare-focused nonprofits.
Support organizations that provide medical care to underserved communities, fund research, or offer professional development for clinicians.

2. Volunteer your expertise.
From free clinics to public health initiatives, your medical knowledge can make an immediate impact.

3. Organize a department or practice fundraising effort.
A collective challenge or matching campaign can amplify giving and foster camaraderie.

4. Support physician wellness programs.
Give to organizations or internal initiatives that promote mental health resources, resilience training, or peer-support networks.

5. Advocate and raise awareness.
Use your voice through social media, professional meetings, or patient interactions to highlight the importance of Giving Tuesday and the causes you care about.

A Chance to Make a Lasting Impact
Giving Tuesday reminds us that meaningful change often begins with small, purposeful actions. By participating, physicians can help strengthen the health of communities, support colleagues, and advance the mission of compassionate, equitable care.

This Giving Tuesday, consider how you can contribute whether through giving, volunteering, or simply spreading the word. Together, our collective efforts can create a healthier, more supportive world for all.

CMA Foundation Alert: Impact of Upcoming Tax Law Changes on Your Charitable Giving

Posted By Columbus Medical Association - CMA, Friday, October 10, 2025

As we enter the season of giving, a time when many people review their charitable giving plans you may want to take note of new federal tax law changes taking effect January 1, 2026.

Key tax law changes taking effect beginning in 2026, are detailed in a link here from The Columbus Foundation. Individuals or households who itemize and for high-income households, along with small business owners will primarily be affected. Forbes.com suggests that it may make sense for those affected to accelerate charitable giving before the end of 2025. According to Russell James many donors are exploring options of combining several years of giving into one tax year to maximize deductions. This is a strategy that became popular in 2018 and is referred to as “bunching.”

For nearly 70 years, the CMA Foundation has turned physician-led philanthropy into measurable community change. As you plan your year-end giving and evaluate how the upcoming tax changes may affect your strategy, we invite you to consider a commitment to the CMA Foundation.

Physicians built our Foundation to make real, positive impact that reflects their passions, priorities, and legacy. Your support, whether through an annual gift, contribution of appreciated assets, or a gift in your will or living trust, ensures that physician-led innovation continues to improve lives throughout our community.

Let’s Plan Together

The CMA’s Foundation is here to help you align your giving with your goals and values. Feel free to reach out to Paula Cosby, CMA Foundation Director at pcosby@cmafohio.org or 614-240-7410 to discuss options that make sense for you and your family.

Updated: Thursday, September 18, 2025

Nurturing our future leaders is a key priority for the CMA Foundation. Our Youth Advisory Council kicked off their school year with energy and purpose with their first meeting on September 16, 2025! These student leaders, ranging from 8th to 12th grade, set their 2025–2026 Health & Wellness Priorities that will guide their grantmaking and shape healthier futures for our community.

The Council welcomed a new member who is currently the only 8th grader in the group. The remaining council members are four high school seniors, three juniors, and four sophomores. The group also established the upcoming year’s Health and Wellness Priorities, which will set up the guidelines on which grants they will consider funding in their community. These priorities will also be featured on the CMAF website.

The 2025-2026 Health and Wellness Funding Priorities are:

  • Mental Health
  • Social Disparities
  • Substance Abuse
  • Bullying and Peer Pressure
  • Basic Needs
  • Body Image and Self Esteem
  • Sexual Health and Healthy Relationships

Youth Advisory Council Builds Perspective on Policy and Community Impact

Posted By Columbus Medical Association - CMA, Thursday, August 21, 2025

The CMA Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council kicked off the school year this week with a team building activity! Local educators Derek and Glennon with Erase the Space  facilitated an impactful workshop on how public policy can affect different communities.

Students were assigned random descriptions of family characteristics, such as race, occupation, religion, etc. They used these assumed identities to figure out how their household would be affected by housing policy and redlining in Columbus. Many of the students were enlightened on how their own neighborhoods were impacted in one way or another.

The workshop expanded their toolkit to enhance funding decisions as they provide grant support for local nonprofits in the months to come.
